Vehicle Registration Renewal
Broward County vehicle registration renewal is handled by the Broward County Tax Collector. This article explains when to renew, how the online, kiosk, Express Lane, and office options work, what information to prepare, and which restrictions or added fees may affect your choice.
Registration Expiration and Renewal Dates
A vehicle registered in Broward County must have a valid registration. For a personal vehicle, registration expires at midnight on the first owner’s birthday. The same rule applies to a personal heavy truck weighing up to 7,999 pounds. If more than one person owns the vehicle, use the first owner’s birthday when planning the renewal.
The Tax Collector allows registration renewal up to three months before expiration. Renewing during that period can leave time for mail delivery if you do not need a printed registration and decal immediately. The Broward County Tax Collector’s registration renewal page provides the available renewal options and their current instructions.
Expiration rules differ for other types of registrations. Vessel registrations expire at midnight on the owner’s birthday, and registration is required for vessels with a motor. Mobile home registrations expire annually on December 31. Check the type of registration you are renewing before assuming that the birthday rule applies.
Which Renewal Method Fits Your Situation?
The Tax Collector offers online renewal, self-service kiosks, Express Lane pickup, and in-person renewal. The best choice depends on when you need the registration, how long it has been expired, whether the registration qualifies for a kiosk, and how you prefer to pay.
Online with mail delivery: Complete the renewal online and expect the registration by mail within 7–10 business days.
Self-service kiosk: For an eligible registration, the updated registration and decal print during the transaction.
Express Lane: Renew online, choose in-person pickup, and collect the registration at the Plantation office after receiving a ready-for-pickup notice.
In person: Visit the Tax Collector’s motor vehicle office in Plantation as a walk-in customer.
These methods have different payment charges and limits for expired registrations. Review those differences before beginning a transaction, particularly if you are renewing more than one vehicle or your registration expired several months ago.
Online Renewal and Delivery
The Broward County Tax Collector provides online registration renewal through its website. The Tax Collector’s online option charges a $3.50 fee per registration. If you renew two vehicles in separate registrations, that fee applies to each one.
The renewal page also identifies Florida’s MyDMV Portal as a statewide online renewal option. Its $2.00 fee covers the entire cart. For a person renewing multiple eligible registrations together, that fee structure can cost less than paying the Tax Collector’s per-registration online fee. Review the transaction details shown by the system you choose before submitting payment.
For a renewal delivered by mail, the Tax Collector says to expect the registration within 7–10 business days. Consider that delivery window when deciding when to renew. If you need the updated registration and decal at the time of the transaction, an eligible kiosk renewal prints them on the spot. Express Lane offers pickup after the office sends a ready notice.
Information for an Online Search
Have your registration renewal notice, current registration, or license plate number available before opening the renewal system. The Broward vehicle registration renewal system offers a search by the PIN on a renewal reminder or by license plate and birthdate. Enter the information for the registration you intend to renew, and review the vehicle or other registered item displayed before paying.
Keep the renewal notice or current registration nearby while completing the transaction. It helps you compare the information shown online with the registration you meant to renew, especially if your household has more than one vehicle. The Tax Collector also lists proof of Florida insurance among the information to have available when required.
Self-Service Kiosk Renewals
Kiosks offer an on-the-spot option for many standard passenger vehicle registrations. To look up a renewal at a kiosk, use either the PIN from the registration renewal notice or the license plate number and the first registrant’s date of birth. The updated registration and decal print at the kiosk when the transaction is completed.
A $4.50 convenience fee applies to each kiosk transaction, along with a 2.3% credit card fee. The Tax Collector states that these charges go to the kiosk vendor rather than the Tax Collector. Kiosks do not accept cash; the renewal page lists card payment for kiosk transactions. Check the payment instructions displayed at the machine before beginning.
Kiosks are inside select Publix and Sedano’s supermarkets across the county. The Tax Collector’s kiosk locations page lists the individual sites. Because a kiosk is inside a store, confirm the location you plan to visit before making the trip.
Registrations a Kiosk Cannot Process
A kiosk cannot renew a vehicle registration that requires a new license plate or has an insurance lapse, driver license suspension, or toll violation on record. The Tax Collector also excludes several registration types from kiosk renewal:
Autonomous and government vehicles
Boats and mobile homes
International Registration Plan (IRP) registrations
National Guard and personalized plates
Parking permits or placards
If your registration falls into one of these categories, choose another renewal method instead of making a trip specifically to use a kiosk. Kiosk eligibility is separate from eligibility for a two-year renewal: an item may qualify for a two-year term but still be excluded from kiosk processing.
If a Kiosk Is Out of Service
The Tax Collector says customers can contact the kiosk vendor using the phone number displayed on an out-of-service machine. Online renewal and an office visit are also available alternatives. If your registration has been expired for more than three months, use the office option because a kiosk will no longer process the renewal.
Express Lane Pickup in Plantation
Express Lane combines online renewal with pickup at the Tax Collector’s Plantation office. It is available for vehicle, vessel, and mobile home registrations. Complete the registration renewal and payment online, then select “In-person Pick Up” as the delivery option.
Wait for a notice saying the registration is ready before going to the office. The Tax Collector describes Express Lane as next-business-day pickup, but specifically instructs customers not to visit for pickup until they receive that notice. Bring a valid photo ID when collecting the registration.
For the online portion, have the renewal notice, current registration, or license plate number available, along with proof of Florida insurance when required. If pickup is unnecessary, you can select mail delivery instead; the stated mail expectation is 7–10 business days. The Plantation office’s regular hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Renewing at the Motor Vehicle Office
You can complete a registration renewal as a walk-in customer at the Broward County Tax Collector’s motor vehicle office in Plantation. The office’s regular hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Tax Collector’s locations page identifies the motor vehicle office separately from its tax office, so select the motor vehicle location for an in-person registration renewal.
Bring a photo ID and your renewal notice, current registration, or license plate number. Bring proof of Florida personal injury protection insurance as listed in the Tax Collector’s office instructions. If you are renewing a commercial vehicle, the listed items also include a Heavy Vehicle Use Tax receipt from the IRS and proof of Florida combined limits insurance.
An office visit is also the renewal route when an online system or kiosk can no longer process an expired registration. The Tax Collector states that in-person renewal has no time limit based on how long the registration has been expired. Additional amounts may still apply to a late renewal.
Payment Charges at the Office
Payment method affects the amount charged at the office. Credit card payments carry a convenience fee of 2.55% of the total transaction amount. Debit card payments carry a flat $2.55 fee. Cash and check payments at an office have no convenience fee.
For a larger transaction, the flat debit card charge may be lower than the percentage-based credit card charge. The Tax Collector says convenience fees go directly to the payment processor and that it receives no portion of those fees. Review the displayed total before paying so you can distinguish the renewal amount from a card-processing charge.
One-Year and Two-Year Renewals
Broward County offers a 24-month renewal option for most passenger vehicles. The full two-year fee is due when you renew. A two-year term can reduce how often you complete a renewal transaction, but it is available only for eligible registrations.
The Tax Collector lists passenger vehicles, SUVs, light trucks under 5,000 pounds, motorcycles, vessels, mobile homes, and motor homes as eligible for two-year renewal. Some registrations are limited to one year, including restricted or specialty plates such as National Guard and personalized plates; commercial and heavy trucks with an empty weight of 8,000 pounds or more under Class Code 41; semi-trailers, transporters, and dealer registrations; government and official state vehicles; and autonomous vehicles.
Do not use vehicle size alone to choose a term. The expiration rule for a personal heavy truck up to 7,999 pounds and the two-year restriction for commercial or heavy trucks at an empty weight of 8,000 pounds or more describe different registration details. Use the term offered for your registration during the renewal transaction.
Late Fees and Expired Registrations
The Tax Collector says a delinquent fee is added if a registration is not renewed before the last day of its renewal month. The fee begins on the 11th day of the following month, and its amount depends on the license tax. The listed delinquent fees are:
License tax up to $25.00: $5.00 fee
License tax from $25.01 through $50.00: $10.00 fee
License tax from $50.01 through $100.00: $15.00 fee
License tax from $100.01 through $400.00: $50.00 fee
License tax from $400.01 through $600.00: $100.00 fee
License tax of $600.01 or higher: $250.00 fee
The method you can use also changes as time passes. Online renewal is available up to three months after the expiration date, and kiosks allow renewal within that same three-month period. Afterward, visit an office in person. The Tax Collector places no time limit on in-person renewal based on the length of expiration.
The delinquent fee and the limit on online or kiosk renewal are separate rules. Being within the three-month window for an electronic transaction does not mean a late fee cannot apply. Review the total shown during renewal and choose the office if the online system or kiosk will not process your registration.
Common Renewal Mix-Ups
Several details can send a renewal to the wrong place or delay completion. The Tax Collector’s tax office and motor vehicle office appear separately on its locations page; registration renewal at an office belongs with Motor Vehicle Services in Plantation. If you select Express Lane pickup, wait for the ready-for-pickup notice rather than visiting as soon as you submit the online payment.
For kiosk searches, the date of birth must be the first registrant’s. A kiosk also cannot handle every registration that could otherwise be renewed, including boats and mobile homes. Before choosing a kiosk for immediate printing, compare your registration type and any insurance, license, toll, or plate issue with the kiosk restrictions.
Finally, compare fees by transaction rather than by payment method alone. The Tax Collector’s online fee is per registration, the stated MyDMV Portal fee covers a cart, a kiosk charges per transaction plus a card fee, and office card charges vary by credit or debit payment. Those differences matter most when renewing multiple registrations or paying a larger amount.

Vehicle Registration Renewal FAQs
Can I renew without the reminder that came in the mail?
Yes. The Broward vehicle registration renewal system lets you search with the license plate number and birthdate instead of the PIN on a renewal reminder. Use the first registrant’s birthdate, even if another person in the household usually handles the renewal. Check that the vehicle displayed is the one you intend to renew before paying.
Why did the kiosk reject my registration?
A kiosk may decline a renewal when the vehicle needs a new plate or its record shows an insurance lapse, driver license suspension, or toll violation. Some registration and plate types are also excluded. A rejected kiosk transaction does not tell you that every other renewal method is available; the issue on the record may still need attention. Review the Tax Collector’s renewal rules before trying another method.
Can I pick up my registration right after paying online?
Only if you chose “In-person Pick Up” during the online transaction, and you must wait for the ready-for-pickup notice before going to the Plantation office. The Tax Collector describes Express Lane as next-business-day pickup, but the notice is the signal that your registration is ready. Bring a valid photo ID. A renewal submitted for mail delivery follows the mail option instead.
What if my registration has been expired for several months?
Check the expiration date before starting an online or kiosk transaction. Those methods process renewals only through three months after expiration. Once that window has passed, renew in person at a Tax Collector office. A delinquent fee may also be part of the amount due; the fee depends on the license tax, so review the total for your registration rather than assuming a flat late charge.
